Why Student Holistic Development Is No Longer Optional

For decades, academic performance has been the dominant yardstick of student success that education systems still rely on till this day. Grades, test scores, and academic streaming have defined a student’s path and future. But as the world shifts, so must our understanding of what it means to prepare young people for life.
Today, educators, parents, and policymakers are increasingly recognising that academic achievement alone is no longer enough. Holistic student development – which includes mental health, social-emotional well-being, life skills, character education and more is not a “nice-to-have”. It is non-negotiable.
The Wake-Up Call: What the Data Tells Us
Across the globe, many trends have sparked an urgent rethink of our education systems:
- World Health Organisation estimates that one in seven 10- to 19-year-olds experiences a mental disorder, accounting for 15 per cent of the global burden of disease in this age group, while suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among those aged 15 to 24. (Source) While an OECD Report found that most schools rely on annual or termly self-report surveys, which “reflect the student’s state at one point in time and may not capture short-term or emerging challenges.” (Source)
- According to the National Youth Mental Health Study (NYMHS) conducted by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, CHAT (Centre of Excellence for Youth Mental Health) and NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, they found that among the participants of the study, about one in three young people aged between 15 and 35 years in Singapore reported experiencing severe or extremely severe symptoms of depression, anxiety and/or stress. This is similar to other research studies conducted on youth mental health and well-being based on self-reporting. (Source)
- Furthermore, assessing a student just based on their academic grades and outcomes is not enough in an ever-changing world. According to the OECD’s Learning Compass 2030, future-ready learners need more than academic knowledge, they require “transformative competencies” like resilience, collaboration, and the ability to navigate complex, uncertain futures. A Shift in Mindset: The Rise of Holistic Development
Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) has been leading the shift towards holistic education. From Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) to the Positive Education Movement, more schools are integrating values, life skills, and mental wellness into the curriculum.
But implementing holistic development isn’t easy. Schools face several challenges:
- Lagging Indicators: Termly well-being surveys are too infrequent to capture real-time emotional or social shifts.
- Limited Resources: Most schools have just 1 to 2 counsellors for hundreds or even thousands of students.
- Invisible or Silent Sufferers: Students who “fly under the radar” are often missed – until it’s too late.
Enter Nurture by Dive Analytics: A Unified Platform Built for the Whole Child
At Dive Analytics, we believe every student deserves to be seen, heard, and supported—not just for their academic results, but for who they are. That’s why we developed Nurture, in collaboration with local educators and grounded in MOE’s values and frameworks.
Here are a few key ways Nurture empowers schools to support their student holistic development:
- Weekly Well-being Check-ins: Students can complete regular check-ins using a research-backed framework called the Circumplex Model of Affect.
Depending on their valence and arousal levels, students will be prompted to select specific emotions and their intensity levels. Students will also be prompted to reflect on what contributed to that feeling — is it school, family, friends — and even track other indicators like exercise levels, sleep patterns and screen time. This gives teachers real-time insights into their well-being, not weeks and months too late. - Sentiment Analysis & Dashboards: Teachers and school leaders can spot patterns, identify silent sufferers, and intervene early with targeted support.
- Social Network Analysis (SNA): Our Social Network Analysis (SNA) module helps teachers understand the social dynamics of each class, detect isolation, and make data-driven decisions for student groupings and inclusion.
- Digital E-Portfolios & Marketplace: Students are able to easily enroll into school-related opportunities listed in the marketplace and document all of their non-academic achievements, participations, skills, hobbies and personal growth. These features support self-directed learning and purposeful reflection, both of which are key aspects of holistic development.
- Timely Notifications: Weekly email notifications helps teachers to flag out at-risk students and send out weekly or bi-weekly email alerts to homeroom teachers – making interventions timely instead of reactive.
The Way Forward: Making the Invisible Visible
When we focus only on academics, we miss the child behind the grade. Holistic development is not a trend, it is a moral imperative, a policy priority, and a 21st-century necessity. Schools that embrace this holistic mindset and equip themselves with tools like Nurture are better placed to nurture confident, caring, and future-ready individuals. In the long run, what truly defines success is not just how well students perform in exams, but how well they live, lead, and lift others around them.
